What to See and Do!

Shopping

If farm shops are your thing, we are spoilt for choice. The closest is ‘Tre Pol and Pen’ which is located just outside of Treburley approximately 4.5 miles away.  A bit further away at Lifton (approximately 12 miles) is ‘Strawberry Fields’. Both of these farm shops also have excellent cafe/restaurants which serve delicious breakfasts, cream teas and roast dinners!

Callington is located approximately 5 miles away. There is a small Tesco’s on the outskirts of town, along with takeaways, a bank, a Spar convenience store and the nearest fuel station.

Launceston (approx. 8.5 miles) is a historic market town, which offers a range of independent and specialty shops selling locally produced foods through to unique and unusual gifts. Liskeard (approximately 9 miles) is another historic market town, with a wide range of independent shops.

Tavistock is located approximately 13.5 miles to the east. Tavistock is one of the main towns on Dartmoor and is a thriving, market town that holds World Heritage Status. Tavistock has a wide range of independent shops, many of which sell excellent local produce.

Eating

Cidermill Cottages is in quite a remote, rural location, but we are lucky enough to have a wide range of excellent pubs, restaurants and cafes in the local area, anywhere from a 10-minute to a 30-minute drive away. Our welcome book contains a full list of recommendations for places to eat, including those that are dog friendly, but some of the closest include: The Manor House Inn at Rilla Mill, the Springer Spaniel at Treburley, the White Hart at Chilsworthy, the Rising Sun at Altarnun and The Cornish Arms at Tavistock.

Days Out

Because we are located in the heart of Cornwall, most places are easy to get to and nowhere is very far in Kernow! Here are some of our favourite days out in the County!

An invigorating walk to the top of Roughtor on a clear, crisp and sunny day and if we are feeling pumped, we might even add in a loop up to the top of Brown Willy; Cornwall’s mini mountain! A flask of hot chocolate is obligatory and a pasty from Phillip Warren’s always goes down well!

Hire a bike and head off along the Granite Way, an 11-mile traffic-free walking and cycling trail which runs along a disused railway line between Okehampton and Lydford. It’s mostly flat with fantastic views and you can’t go wrong with a pub lunch at the Dartmoor Inn!

A drive over to Summerleaze Beach at Bude for a stroll along the beach, exploring the amazing rock formations and rock pools, followed by either a hot chocolate with all the trimmings from ‘Life’s a Beach’, or a 99 from the Kelly’s Ice Cream Van at the Widemouth Bay cliff top car park!

A day by the seaside down at Looe, crabbing by the Ferry steps whilst waiting for a boat trip over to Polperro to take in the narrow, winding streets of this historic fishing village.

A trip over to the villages of Tintagel and Boscastle to explore the legend of Kind Arthur, including a walk over the dramatic cliff top bridge! *A good head for heights required!

A bike ride over Dartmoor including a stop for a pint of Jail Ale at Princetown, followed by fish and chips at the Rugglestone Inn at Widecombe in the Moor.
